Sharpen the skills necessary to drive impact in public affairs

The mission of the MPA program is to cultivate and elevate future global leaders equipped to address complex, cross-border, and evolving policy challenges. In alignment with the Watson School’s strategic plan, the program emphasizes an interdisciplinary and publicly engaged approach to policy education, integrating analytical rigor with real-world application and professional skills to prepare graduates for leadership across sectors.

Through the core curriculum and track-based structure, MPA students will develop the following competencies:

  • Interdisciplinary problem-solving, integrating perspectives from multiple fields to address complex policy challenges
  • Data-driven analysis and evidence-based decision-making, including quantitative methods and data management
  • Policy analysis, design, and implementation, grounded in institutional and political realities across global contexts
  • Leadership and management in diverse settings, with an emphasis on collaboration, ethics, and organizational effectiveness
  • Strategic communication and policy writing, tailored to varied stakeholders
  • Applied policy practice, including experience with case-based learning, simulations, and real-world policy engagement
  • Negotiation and cross-sector collaboration, reflecting the interconnected nature of modern policymaking
