An initiative of the Watson School, Art at Watson illuminates the School's mission by enhancing social-science inquiry through the arts.

Art at Watson is proud to show works by Brown University students, faculty, alumni and staff, as well as by artists from outside this community. 

Since 2013, a committee of faculty, students, staff  and community members has brought over 50 diverse exhibitions to Brown’s Watson School of International and Public Affairs, amplifying the School’s mission of promoting a just and peaceful world.

Odisha Illuminated: A Celebration of Ritual in a Modern World

The appliqué panels in this exhibition come from Odisha, a coastal region in eastern India along the Bay of Bengal, where textile traditions remain deeply embedded in public life and shaped by centuries of trade, pilgrimage, and ritual movement.

Juben Rabbani, a Watson Ph.D. fellow from the Department of Anthropology, created a unique art project as a “visual supplement” to his master’s thesis on the impact of the EV transition on the Salton Sea region of California. Now, he has teamed up with Art at Watson to turn it into a multimedia exhibition, which will be on display until the end of summer 2026.

"Looming in the Shadows of Lodz," a new exhibition by photographer Leslie Starobin, opens at 280 Brook St. on February 13. Sponsored by Art at Watson, the show features Starobin's photographs from a "roots journey" to Poland. Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, "Looming in the Shadows of Lodz" illustrates how traumatic memories are passed down through generations.

A recent Rhode Island Monthly article featured "The Power of Faces," an art exhibit hosted by Watson's Art at Watson Committee and the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies, which showcases portraits of refugees.
