This fall, the Watson Institute will host a series of events that explore a wide range of pressing issues, from constitutional law and reproductive justice to global economics and refugee experiences. Below are some highlights of what’s to come.
September 17: Watson will host a Constitution Day event titled "Looking Back and Understanding the Power of the Law," featuring former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson.
September 24: The Taubman Center for American Politics & Policy presents "Governor Frank Licht ’38 Lecture," featuring María Teresa Kumar, co-founder and president of the Voto Latino Foundation.
September 26: The Watson Institute’s JFK Jr. Initiative for Documentary Film and Social Progress presents a "Screening of Tango with Putin" with an introduction by the film's director and producer, Vera Krichevskaya. Krichevskaya, who is also a visiting lecturer at the Watson Institute this year, will introduce the film.
September 27: The William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance presents "How the World Ran Out of Everything," featuring Peter S. Goodman, global economics correspondent for The New York Times.
October 9: The Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies and Art at Watson will host a panel discussion titled "Refugee Experiences: Perspectives from Rhode Island and Beyond" in conjunction with the art exhibit “The Power of Faces: Looking at the Global Refugee Crisis.” Panelists include Daniel Farber Huang, Theresa Menders, Omar Bah, and Justin Bibee, with Wendy Schiller as the moderator.
October 22: The Taubman Center for American Politics & Policy co-sponsors "Reproductive Justice and Women’s Health at the Supreme Court in 2023-2024: What Lies Ahead," featuring Liz Tobin-Tyler, JD, MA, Associate Professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice at the Brown University School of Public Health and of Family Medicine and Medical Science at the Alpert Medical School.
October 28: The Taubman Center for American Politics & Policy presents an in-depth discussion with "Olivia Beavers, congressional reporter for Politico", as part of the Paolino Speaker Series. Beavers will join Wendy Schiller for a conversation on the potential impact of the 2024 presidential election on Congress and the broader Republican agenda.
October 29: The Watson Institute’s JFK Jr. Initiative for Documentary Film and Social Progress presents a screening and discussion of the documentary "And So I Stayed." The discussion will feature Watson Interim Director Wendy Schiller in conversation with Natalie Pattillo, filmmaker and writer of the acclaimed documentary, which tells the stories of survivors of abuse who are unjustly incarcerated for their acts of survival.
