Opportunity
Applications are now open for the Watson PhD Research and Travel Awards, which support Brown Ph.D. students engaged in policy-relevant research. These competitive awards can be used to cover approved research, fieldwork and/or travel costs.
The maximum award — for exceptional applications — is $5,000, but typical awards will be between $500 and $3,000. Applicants are encouraged to seek additional sources of internal and external funding for larger projects.
Eligibility: Applications are open to Brown PhD students who are in good standing and engaged in policy-relevant research.
Selection criteria: Applications will be prioritized and selected on the basis of their perceived need and merit—including their importance to both the applicants and the broader Watson community—insofar as funds allow. Preference will be given to applications from students who participate in Watson-sponsored events and activities and pursue external funding sources.
To apply, please submit the following items via Ufunds by May 12th, 2026
(1) a one-page summary of the purpose of your research—including its policy-relevance—and how it relates to your graduate studies at Brown;
(2) on a separate page, a budget showing anticipated expenses and other sources of support, whether attained, solicited, or pending;
(3) a current cv;
(4) your graduate transcripts;
(5) a brief letter of support from your adviser or a knowledgeable faculty member submitted via UFunds
Applicants with questions should contact Hayden Reiss at Watson_Fellows@brown.edu or the program director, Andrew Schrank at Andrew_Schrank@brown.edu.
Additional requirements:
Award recipients will be required to participate in Watson events and discuss the results of their research at a colloquium in the fall.
Applications are due by May 12th.
