Application Deadline March 10, 2025

Watson Ph.D. Fellows Research and Travel Funding

Opportunity

The Watson Ph.D. Fellows Program is accepting research and travel funding applications from doctoral students in the departments of anthropology, economics, history, political science and sociology. These competitive awards can be used to cover research, fieldwork and/or travel costs related to one or more of the core Watson themes of development, governance and security. The Watson Graduate Affairs Committee will make funding decisions. Preference will be given to students who participate in Watson-sponsored events and activities and pre-dissertation students (i.e., those who have not yet defended a prospectus).

The maximum grant award — for exceptional applications — is $5,000, but typical awards will be between $500 and $3,000. Applicants are encouraged to seek additional sources of funding depending on the scope of their project.

Eligibility

Applications are open to Ph.D. students who are in good standing in one of Watson's core departments — anthropology, economics, history, political science and sociology — and engaged in the study of development, governance and/or security, broadly defined.

Selection criteria

Applications will be prioritized and selected by the Graduate Affairs Committee on the basis of their perceived importance to both the applicants and the broader Watson community insofar as funds allow. Preference will be given to applications from students who participate in Watson-sponsored events and activities, pursue external funding sources, and have not yet defended a dissertation prospectus.

Applicants must submit the following via UFunds:

  1. A one-page summary of the purpose of the applicant's research on one or more of the core Watson themes of development, governance and security with an explanation of how it relates to their graduate studies at Brown and/or their dissertation project.

  2. On a separate page, a budget showing anticipated expenses and other sources of attained, solicited or pending support.

Applicants with questions should contact Hayden Reiss at Watson_Fellows@brown.edu or the Incoming Director, Andrew Schrank, at Andrew_Schrank@brown.edu

Additional requirements:

Award recipients must present their work at a research forum in the fall.

Applications are due March 10, 2025, and decisions will be made by April 4.
