Watson Ph.D. Fellows Research Funding

Opportunity

The Watson Institute Ph.D. Fellows program is offering research grants to Ph.D. students in Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, or Sociology with a research focus on one or more of the core Watson themes of development, governance and security. These grants cover fieldwork and other forms of research. Preference will be given to students who participate in Watson sponsored events and activities, and to pre-dissertation students (students who have not defended their prospectus).

How to apply for Watson PhD Fellows 2025 research funding:

Preference will be given to PhD students who participate in Watson sponsored events and activities and to pre-dissertation students (students who have not defended their prospectus).

The maximum grant award for exceptional grant awards is $5,000, but typical awards are between $500 and $3,000. Students are encouraged to seek additional sources of funding depending on the scope of their project.

Recipients will be required to present at the Back from the Field event in fall 2025 and required to submit a 1,000 word written reflection on their fieldwork which may be posted on our website.

To apply, please submit the following items via UFunds:

Deadline for submitting the application: Mar 10, 2025

(1) A one-page summary of the purpose of your research and how it relates to your graduate studies at Brown, on one or more of the core Watson themes of development, governance and security and to your dissertation project.

(2) On a separate page, a budget showing anticipated expenses. It should also state other sources of support (including any you plan to apply for).
