Why did you study international relations?
By studying international relations, I hope to gain a multidisciplinary understanding of global issues through the lenses of anthropology, political science, economics, and history. I have been dedicating myself to studying languages, politics, and humanitarian crises that affect the world.
What are your plans for this summer?
This summer I will be interning in the Humanitarian Affairs division of the Permanent United States Mission to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland. In Geneva, the heart of diplomacy, I am offered the privilege to see the inner workings of the United Nations. As part of the Humanitarian Affairs team, I assist with tracking and reporting on humanitarian headquarters organizations such as the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Organization for Migration. I liaise with these organizations as well as other NGOs in order to monitor and analyze their progress and goals. I frequently attend meetings and write reports for the U.S. government. Our team collectively works towards the US Mission's goals of providing life-sustaining assistance, building global partnerships and promoting best practices in humanitarian response.
I am thankful and excited for this opportunity especially since it is closely linked to what I see myself doing in the future. I hope to gain experience and knowledge so that I can continue to work in the humanitarian field and hold governments and agencies accountable for their actions.
