Tracking Opposition to New Wind Infrastructure in the Developing World

A new paper co-authored by Jennifer Hadden for the Climate Solutions Lab examines why communities in developing countries oppose wind power projects and how that opposition could hinder clean energy expansion.

Jennifer Hadden, Associate Professor of Political Science and International and Public Affairs, recently co-authored a white paper for the Climate Solutions Lab titled “Tracking Opposition to New Wind Infrastructure in the Developing World.”

The paper offers lessons for developers and policymakers working to advance climate policy while addressing local community concerns. Currently, no systematic data exists on opposition to wind power in developing countries—despite these regions containing the majority of the world’s operating and planned wind farm capacity. The authors argue that this knowledge gap limits understanding of the social acceptance of wind energy in key global regions.
