Matthew Vogel
Biography
Matthew Vogel is Professor of the Practice Brown University’s School of Public Health and the Watson School of International and Public Affairs. He previously was a Senior Fellow at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Visiting Scientist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
His career in government spans the executive and legislative branches. He spent eight years as a member of the core economic team advising President Obama. From 2009-2013, his roles included Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, Chief of Staff to the National Economic Council, and Director of G-8/G-20 Affairs at the National Security Council. From 2013 to 2017, he was Chief of Staff of USTR, the trade cabinet agency, and acted as Deputy United States Trade Representative. In Congress, he was Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Martin T. Meehan. In the private sector, he was most recently Senior Vice President at the D.E. Shaw Group, a quantitative hedge fund.
He holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science from Georgetown University. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Vogel's research focuses on innovation and competition in the global biopharmaceutical industry. His writing has appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, Science Translational Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Health Forum, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Health Affairs.
